Home Decor

My dad got us a great surf photo for Christmas this year. His friend runs www.vintage-surf.com and sells all kinds of vintage photos from Hawaii, mounted on rice paper and framed in bamboo. Ours is a photo of surfers watching huge waves on the beach near Diamond Head. It's amazing!

However, in spite of the amazingness, the photo spent a lot of time in the box while I figured out the final look. We've had to do a lot of legwork to get to this:

Hurdle #1 - Check out this photo of the wall before. See the thermostat between the pictures?

Who puts the thermostat right in the middle of a big blank wall? I went nuts trying to decide where to hang the picture because I wanted it right where that darn thermostat juts out two inches from the wall.
Solution? Tom came up with a great idea to mount wood blocks on the back to stand the frame out from the wall. Now it sits right over the thermostat. Yes!

Hurdle #2 - Now the light-colored wood blocks stick out like a sore thumb when viewed from the side.

Solution? I have a bottle of cheap brown shoe polish that poses pretty well as wood stain. The color matches the frame perfectly. Looks great!

Hurdle #3 - I'm a bit sloppy with the polish. I was too lazy to take the photo down once Tom hung it, and the sponge tip on the bottle of polish kept rubbing against the wall. Our very cheap "flat paint" (I'm convinced it's just primer!) soaks it up like a sponge. Now I have lovely brown spots around the diameter. Nice.
Solution - like a good renter, I ask the handyman for some touch up paint. When he saw the mess I'd made he said I'll never get a job working for him. My dreams shatter. Shake it off. Shelby and I go to the hardware store (in the crazy rain California got last week) to get a paint roller and then I go to it. Our super cheap paint needs eight coats over the next three days. Then, magically, the wall looks good as new.

Tom hung up the picture again (I sucked it up and took it off the wall to paint) and VOILA!!! It looks amazing.

Finally we can proudly show off our Christmas present.

Thanks Dad!

Typical Dad gift.....requires lots of effort to enjoy!

Sorry, but it really looks good and matches the whole surfer vibe there in Redondo Beach!

Love you!

You are so funny! That sounds like quite the ordeal!! It looks good though and I am sure the wall looks even better to you cause you remember all the hard work every time you look at it!! We have a wall like that :)

It's always funny when seemingly small tasks turn into HUGE ordeals. But the end result is fantastic.

lol! After that much work you'd have to either love it or hate it--I'm glad you're on the side of love. :)

It looks awesome (but how do you change the thermostat?).

Change the thermostat? We live in California! Forecast: 70 degrees and sunny. Forever.
