My friend Jessica and I ran the St. George Marathon on Saturday. In the rain. It was miserable. Now, as I sit here with ice on my right knee and Neosporin on the raw patches on my arms and chest, I think: "What have I done to myself?" Yet it's impossible to feel anything but a huge sense of accomplishment after a 26.2 mile run...even though it took me 25 minutes longer to finish than my first marathon, St. George 2006.
The best part was the end, a) because it was FINALLY OVER! and b) because Tom, my parents, and my brother Taylor were there to meet me with high fives, water, and three sweatshirts to warm me up. I recovered thanks to a warm change of clothes, some good stretches from Taylor, and an awesome post-run massage...for free!

I got these photos from the race emailed to me today (I've obviously used the proofs here...don't judge me!). In more than a few of them, I look like I'm about to die. I'd guess that those are the more accurate shots. But I'm vain, so I'm only showing the ones that make me look halfway decent, at least by comparison!

I love that I can blame it on the rain, but I'll leave that to Milli Vanilli now. The truth is, I wasn't as prepared as I should have been and I totally ran out of gas. I need to be more consistent, run more long runs, and stretch.
I'll keep those things in mind...for my next marathon!

GO YOU! thats awesome!
Congrats! You're one tough cookie!
Impressive! Hey, you should come run at our PF Chang's Rock 'n Roll marathon sometime (Alice Cooper started it years ago), we'd even put you up :)
That is so awesome! I wish that was something that I could say I have done. Maybe when we are done having kids I'll make it a goal.
Wow... what an accomplishment. I definately couldn't have done that. So you probably don't remember me, Chelsea Fleming, but I found your blog through Chelsea and Aaron's. You and your hubby are way cute... Glad to see you are happy and obviously healthy!!
Way to go, sister! I wish we could have been there to cheer you on! You're awesome!
Admittedly, I wouldn't consider running a marathon in the best of conditions, but in the rain!? Doubly impressive.
You are one amazing chick! I am so impressed with your guts and hard work. I don't think I could WALK that far unless there were chocolate almonds along the way--sort of like ET. You are beautiful in so many ways!!
Congratulations Heather! that is awesome. Running a marathon is one of my life goals. Hopefully it will happen in the near future!
Heather - One more thing to add to my long list of things that make me so proud of you!
I'm so glad we were there to watch you finish your 2008 St. George Marathon!
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENT!
LOVE ALWAYS,
Dad
Hey Heather,
I cannot believe you ran a marathon...not once but twice!! You are my inspiration...But I think I need to start with a 5K!!! Good job!!!
So impressive, and in the rain. You go girl!
26.2 in the rain?! Hardcore, girl. Love it. And you look fab in your pictures!
Crazy impressive! You may have been pushing through tired during the race, but you sure nailed that last picture and made it look like nothing. Weirdly, it really does make me want to try for a marathon some day too--but that means more than 30 min. about 4 times a year on my treadmill...
You go, girl! I admire your tenacity. I could never run a marathon-nay, I don't want to run a marathon. I could if I really had to, but I have no desire whatsoever to ever run...again. But you are awesome for doing it!
