We had fun celebrating our nation's birthday. We refer to the fourth as America's birthday to get Shelby pumped for her own, just three days later. She's welcome to share the fireworks.
| Tom proudly wore the red, white, and blue tinsel headband at Shelby's insistence. He's a good sport. |
Moorpark is funny. The city says, why wait til the fourth of July when you can celebrate on the third? So we watched our Independence Day fireworks a night early.
There's a hill behind our neighborhood with a bench at the top. There's a
fantastic view of the fireworks. It was the perfect place to sit as a
family and enjoy the show.
My
phone camera doesn't get along with night time too well, but my regular
camera's battery was dead (surprise, surprise...). Still, the kids were
cute enough for pictures.
| Taking a quick snuggle break - it was chilly! |
We spent the afternoon of the real Fourth of July at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. It's a quick drive from our house and today they had a bunch of free Independence Day activities.
Shelby had some patriotic hearts painted on her cheek, complete with glitter. Tom and I got painted too, but we didn't attempt to have Cameron sit still for that one.
Aw, little patriots! I don't think I've ever been able to get the kids into one of these cutouts without a hand holding the side.
Cameron loves flags! He perfected that word today.
After the Reagan Library we went to a BBQ at a friend's house.
And at the end of the day Shelby's flag routine got us revved up before going out to watch fireworks.

you are so on the ball already having the 4th of july posted :) anyway - here's my pasta salad recipe (or i guess i should say, my mom's recipe). it's my favorite! i don't use a store bought dressing like most people, it's completely homemade!
first - pick out the veggies you want. i usually use broccoli, carrots, cherry tomatos, cucumber, and olives (but i didn't have any olives on hand this last time). i cook the broccoli and carrots for just a quick minute. use just a tiny bit of water and bring to a boil, then take off the heat and just let them steam. they are still nice and crunchy, but not too crunchy.
my mom always uses the coloful rotini pasta, but i use the whole wheat kind. cook it just like normal.
for the dressing, combine:
1 1/2 tsp seasoned pepper
1 1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp italian seasoning
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp crushed basil
1/4 tsp dill weed
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup white vinegar (i usually use just slightly less than this on the vinegar)
stir everything together, chill in the fridge, and ENJOY! let me know if you have any questions :)
