I officially live in California now. I lived through my first earthquake today! It was a 5.8 at one point, but it's been demoted to a 5.4. Still, pretty big, right?
I was at my desk at work in Beverly Hills and thought I was going crazy because I felt the building moving. My boss says, "that's an earthquake" very calmly - I think she was trying to convince herself that that actually is what she was feeling! At that point I'm thinking, ok, at least I'm not crazy - the building really is moving! We are on the fourth floor of our building, not too high, but still we were swaying enough to feel like we were on a boat. The fun part of our office is that most of the walls are glass. Hm, not too comforting when you're trying to find a safe place to stand! I just sat in my chair and enjoyed the ride. I seriously felt seasick afterward with all of the back and forth. Everyone in my office heard that it was my first earthquake experience and was very excited for me.
Tom felt it in Hollywood, too - he emailed me about it, but I haven't caught him on his cell yet because I think everyone in LA was making calls and jamming up the lines. I'll have to get him to post his side of the story!
I'm so happy to be an official Californian!

Ohhhhhh, scary....I saw it online earlier today and so glad you posted about it so I know y'all are okay..first hand. Love.
Crazy!! Now I just need to experience a volcanic eruption and Jake and I will be official Washington-ites.. Washingtonians.. Whatever.
I'm glad you're safe!!
Thats sooo cool. I love earthquakes!! I just had a geology class on them and I Aced the test because I liked learning about them so much! Thats so cool you got to be in one. Of course I wouldn't want you in one above a 7 and up. But thats still cool that you can now say you've been in one and relate to those that have also been in one. As for me...I don't know if I have been in one or no. Too bad.
Eric's first one was in our old house just before we were married. He had been laying on the couch looking out the sliding glass door when he noticed the pool sloshing around. He wasn't sure if he was just imagining it or not, he enjoyed it...but his mom freaked out, she's a bit paranoid about earthquakes. You'll find that Californians love a good rolling earthquake (as long as it doesn't cause real damage), it gives us something to talk about.
Welcome to the club! We're all glad that you guys were safe and that your first was big enough to be fun but not so big as to be tragic. Justin's first was when he was visa-waiting in LA to go to Portugal on his mission. It was the now infamous Northridge Earthquake--they were fine but not so for many.
Scary!! I was in the Big San Francisco earthquake in 89' ( i was a jr. in high school) it was so Bad that 10 days later they were still pulling people out of the Rubble from the Bay Bridge! It's freaky huh?
